CIAS TECHNOLOGIES FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES

Critical infrastructure, such as energy, water, transportation and telecommunications, is essential to every modern society and requires extremely reliable security systems to prevent damage that could be catastrophic. An innovative, comprehensive and layered approach to perimeter protection integrates the world of sensors with the world of video surveillance, allowing all perimeter sensors to operate synergistically with an integrated level of security.
Perimeter security is composed of passive and active measures: Passive systems (like fences or walls) serve to delay intrusion as much as possible; while active systems will detect and define the actual intrusion attempt. This ensures a greater margin of intervention in the shortest possible time, ideally no more than 3 seconds.
Any optimized system will take 3 seconds or less to detect and qualify the intrusion, send an alarm to the control room, in order to launch the right response.

THE LAYERS OF SECURITY

Specific intrusion detection technologies are recommended for each layer or sector of a perimeter. The outermost perimeter of the sensitive site is called Sector 0, which is normally undefended such as a road.

Sector 1 is the physical boundary of the sensitive site and can be protected by passive defenses such as walls or exterior fences, which can be made active by the application of intrusion detection systems on fences, for example. We call it – turning a dumb fence into a smart fence.

Sector 2 is the outer perimeter between the building and Sector 1, usually a buffer corridor, where electronic barriers such as: microwave, infrared or triple technology can be placed

Finally, Sector 3 is the building surface, which may include windows and facades normally protected by radar. Video surveillance, in conjunction with all sensors, completes the supervision of the perimeter.

Here are the technologies typically used:

Protection on the fence

There are several useful technologies for fence protection, or Sector 1, which can be fiber optic systems, magnetophonic cable, or MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) accelerometer-based sensors. They are designed to detect different intrusion attempts such as climbing over, cutting or lifting the fence.

Microwave Barriers

Microwave barriers are one of the most reliable and secure intrusion detection systems used in outdoor perimeter protection, between the building and the first layer, the so-called Sector 2. These barriers perform seamlessly, even in adverse weather conditions, maintain a very high level of detection while maintaining an extremely low rate of false alarms, suitable for protecting high-risk sites.

Short-range Radar and sensors

Radar and sensor technologies ideal for the perimeter protection of building facades, entranceways, balconies, terraces, gates, as well as dead zone coverage (sector 3) including sally ports, for example, in perimeter installations where proper crossing of microwave barriers cannot fill the “gaps” and additional protection is needed.

Integrating perimeter sensors with video surveillance

Complementing protection on all layers (1, 2 and 3) of perimeter security is that of video surveillance, which works in collaboration with the sensor to visually identify and verify information coming from intrusion alarm reporting.

CIAS is not a camera manufacturer however we continue to actively work with a multitude of leading VMS and PSIM platforms with the use of video analytics to bring video together with our sensors.

Explosion proof protection

CIAS’s Explosion proof line of products is designed to ensure maximum safety in high risk environments where explosions could occur, such as petrochemical plants, distilleries, military and critical industrial sites.

Explosion proof devices are enclosed in EExd IIC T6-certified explosion-proof enclosures, complying with the European 94/9/EC directive, for absolute reliability even under the most extreme conditions.

Temporary protection

Temporary security solutions that can be up and running in 30 minutes are designed to protect sensitive areas quickly, flexibly and effectively. Ideal for settings where fixed systems cannot be installed or required for a long time, the MMD system offers reliable perimeter protection in a short time. Using microwave technology, invisible detection zones can be created that detect any intrusion attempt. Installation is quick and easy, with no tools required, making these systems perfect for temporary applications. Portability is ensured by durable and easily transportable containers. The products are modular, battery operated and adaptable to different operational applications. Perfect for construction sites, events, critical infrastructure and military sites.
